I agree with another reviewer journalistic writing hunches about cover ups very scooby doo the section on the personal journey was a little weird but the subject is fascinating and I enjoyed travelling along with Nokes as he figures out what happened on Deep Line Creek in May 1887

Most people from Wallowa County are aware that there exists a mentality by Western Oregonians that is less than favorable toward the place It is a mentality that causes people to wax poetic about the physical beauty of the county while treating the people that live there as detractions at best and ignorant rednecks at worst The author exhibits this mentality From statements about the Elgin Opera House which isn't even yet in Wallowa County as being little used to statements about Lostine not having a school it seems uite likely that the author didn't do a whole lot of talking to residents beyond perhaps the county officials or the local writing group before deciding to spin the story as a cover up That he proclaims his cynicism about the Nez Perce place names in a location where non whites were forced out years ago smacks of hypocrisy for the same sort of cynicism could be justified in most of the United States including the Portland area Overall I appreciated the attempt at bringing to light a horrific incident It was great to see the situation covered from personal historical and contemporary perspectives The author did not overstate the complete inhumanity of the crime nor the racism that led to it But he created a flawed book by tying that crime to Wallowa County and its residents as a whole today
