The Highland Earl is the sixth book in the Lords of the Highlands series and this was an exciting novel for readers who enjoy an action packed story of intrigue and duplicity with a side dish of romance Even better was that this story included an actual historical figure with liberties taken of course There is plenty to adore in this tale about a marriage of convenience that turns deadly and although neither John nor Evelyn entered into the marriage honestly the smoldering attraction that they had for each other kept them tethered together This tethering was enough to give them time to develop some affection for each other but would it be too little too late to undo the damage that was caused by all the omissions that lay between themI was excited to read this book because I have loved all the books that I have read from Author Amy Jarecki There were many elements in The Highland Earl that I truly enjoyed reading but there were parts of this story that didn’t win me over as well I really understand why John was trying to arrange his affairs so that his estate would be out of debt in case he was to pass on unexpectedly That is a perfectly responsible decision and trying to marry a woman with a large dowry makes sense as well My issue was with the fact that his wife the woman he’d been married to for ten years and to whom he had been deeply madly in love with died only a few months before he started to look for another wife I get that he was going to marry for convenience but the way he responded to Evelyn was not one of a man who just lost a woman he considered his soulmate There was nothing wrong with his choices it was just that his behavior to me did not match his history I felt for Evelyn in this story because she was given very few choices in life and she put her faith in people rather blindly When Evelyn first met John she found him attractive right from the start but he was the “enemy” and she only entertained his attentions because it was suggested that spending time with him would be good for intel gathering purposes I would have liked it better if Evelyn had entered into espionage because she was natural at it and was akin to a seasoned professional She was not however and her reasons for spying were emotional and mostly motivated by others When informed about her upcoming marriage it had to be pointed out to her that such a union would put her in an advantageous situation for gathering information That made it hard for me to take her seriously as a spy because she should have figured that out for herself The romance between Evelyn and John was lustful mostly physical and eventually turned into something meaningful but it took a while to get there I had a hard time with the deceit because it went on for far longer than I would have liked Mostly my feelings stem from the fact that John entered the marriage not planning to ever love Evelyn but he did plan to honor her while Evelyn’s motivation was not honoring and made me feel bad for John Although I did like it when Evelyn started seeing the situation clearly and that she tried to make things right I also loved how John responded to the truth and how they worked together to deal with the outcome That was worth all the emotional ups and downs I felt while reading The Highland Earl and this story would be one that I recommend to readers who enjoy a romance with espionageThis review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley It is an honest and voluntary review The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating
