Thelonius Mitchell is tired of being labeled He’s in special ed separated from the “normal” kids at school who don’t have any “issues” That’s enough to make all. We often think of special Ed of as the place where misbehaved children go You never think about these kids unless it’s telling a passing joke about them But you’d be wrongThe Usual Suspects by Maurice Broaddus opens the line of vision to the other side And it was so well doneA cast of misfits make up for a must read middle grade novel that reads like the author has done this a million times over Thelonius and Nehemiah are in their school’s special ed groupclass though they don’t uite belong there Always up to something Nehemiah and Thelonius can’t stop getting caught up in mess; even if they’re the ones causing it It’s all fun and games until someone brings a gun to school Now they’re in the hot seat for something they didn’t do—and because they’re the usual suspects no one believes them Thoroughly relatable and down to earth; you’ll forget this is a middle grade novel But don’t fret it’s perfectly suitable for its intended audience The characters are middle graders with behavioral issues but not for reasons you might imagine These are not bad kids they’re just what you might call busy The like to play tricks and games never realizing the repercussions But this novel shows the growth of the characters and the lessons they learnThe characters are multi layered and true to life Young readers will enjoy the ride from bad to do gooder There are many bumps along the way but also many lessons learned A standout middle grade novel and a great moving up or grade promotion gift

The Usual Suspects Characters » 7 Ä Thelonius Mitchell is tired of being labeled He’s in special ed separated from the “normal” kids at school who don’t have any “issues” That’s enough to make all the teachers and students look at him and his friends with a constant side eye Although his disruptive antics and pranks have given him a Borhood hangout Thelonius and his pals become instant suspects Thelonius may be guilty of pulling crazy stunts at school but a criminal T isn’t about to let that label stick. This middle grade feels like New Kid and every middle grade by Jason Reynolds with the rawness and sweetness that balance out in the message Thelonius is the perfect prankster because it's the best but it's obnoxious and he ends up in the principal's office often It's not until a gun is found near school property that Thelonius and his pals realize that they're going to be targeted unless they figure out who it was This sets off the fact finding expedition where Thelonius has to connect with Marcel the honor student ambassador that has a shady side she never gets caught when Theolnius always does Then there's other friends that he wants to protect and a mentor along with his mother It's a heartfelt story that only suffers from a generally bad cover but the message is loud and clear
