Shelter Me review í 3 Ä From the acclaimed author of Bad Girls comes a “dark break neck paced journey through wartime England full of twists and turns you’ll never see coming” Christopher Golden author of Soulless as a teenage girl discovers that evil comes in many forms when she and a group of friends run away from boarding school in this stunning noveLeigh just wants to be a normal teenager but when German bombs tear apart London during World War II her ultra religious mother sees the destruction as divine punishment She sends Maggie to a remote boarding school in coastal Wales supposedly to keep her safe but also to keep her in line The school is creepy the headmistress is a lunatic and the students range from. Okay so first things first my last name is McAulay the author's last name is McAulay is this a mere coincidence Of course not So I'm completely biased So you can't take my review that this book is great without bearing that in mind But I'm sure it doesn't hurt to tell you a little bit about the history of the bookAlex has written three other teen thrillers all dealing with issues of extraordinary circumstances that force characters to grow and survive All of those books Bad Girls Lost Summer and Oblivion Road take place in present day North America Shelter Me has many of the same elements but this one takes place during World War II in Great Britain I think the inspiration really came from the stories we've heard his parents tell about growing up during World War II Alex's dad stayed in London and was injured mildly during a bomb blast on his street Alex's mom was born during the War in rural Wales because her mother had been evacuated from London for her pregnancy Life in the UK during and after the War was so different from what my own parents had experienced here in the US and it seemed like a really fascinating and trying time We did a lot of research for this book and since I'm a librarian at UCLA I got to search for lots of interesting books and rarities to help get some of the details about the War rightThis book is a little darker than Alex's earlier books as one of the characters in the book says It's not a Teddy Bear world And it's fitting because a terrible war is going on and London and Europe are being destroyed The characters must work against a world in complete flux and their experiences reflect those of the adults everywhere around them
