Mr Di Mare describes a Naples I didn't know existed Among the gangs the alleyways the killings is a love of food that is incongruent with the grime I found the story extremely compelling but the English translation somewhat confusing Not being familiar with Naples there are so many references to street names and areas that it made my head spin With the introduction of each character I found myself checking to see if I had met them already I loved the duality of Carmine actions and his conscience Loved the story but there was a lot of noise in between

This hard hitting panoramic portrayal of life for a diverse group of characters in Naples makes for some compelling reading It took me a while to really get into it as it wanders around uite a lot moving from character to character and going backwards and forwards in time but once I’d become immersed in it I found it totally absorbing It’s a series of vignettes rather than a cohesive novel but none the less powerful for that as all the characters are linked in some way and as the author gradually reveals their back story the reader gets to know them as individuals Firmly rooted in the physical city atmospheric and with much local colour Naples comes across as a violent and dysfunctional place Brutal shootings drugs gang warfare the Camorra corruption – no one seems immune There seems to be no escape from the violence Unfortunately I found the translation clumsy and jarring at times and there are some American references that make no sense in the context of the novel talk of a character perhaps winning a Pulitzer Prize and another claiming to be working for the FBI and I didn’t understand their inclusion Nevertheless I found this an extremely interesting story about real life in Naples a life that few tourists would be likely to see
