Or unlikely adventure in this sardonic roman noir that at times flirts with the outrageousAntoine Vachon is a total loser living in a pitiful bachelor apartment after he has lost his wife and his job as a car salesman When his son’s hockey coach is found dead he is browbeaten into coaching the team for one game He makes it through the game. What a bizarre dark unsettling funny book I felt like there were plot holes disguised as the first person narrator's cluelessness things that didn't in the end uite make sense and wanted to re read it immediately to figure that out but decided I didn't care I'm also not sure the ending was uite earned I think this book would make for a lively book group discussion with some people throwing it across the room and others calling it their favorite It's a fast easy read

Technically well written but the story is lack luster Dark and incredibly comedic at points the story is a fast paced and emotional ride The mystery is interesting enough and some of the characters are very layered It's interesting to see the separation between the main character and his family and what lead to his isolation Very much a character driven book and if I enjoyed the book overall I would probably have a great time dissecting each one That being saidThe main character is an awful human being and it's clear from page 1 that he's meant to be who goes through zero character development He just stays selfish self centered and very insecure throughout the whole thing Granted the book is short and covers the span of probably a little over 24 hours so not a lot of time for personal growth but still from a character stand point the story started and ended in the exact same place The characters I found to be interesting were relegated to middlebackground and the lead's selfishness often outweighed some of the heavier parts of the plot This may work for some but it's really not my thingDidn't hate the book but wasn't in love with it
