Martyr's Monument in Baghdad Ira dedicated to the soldiers that died during the Ira Iran War History is a struggle of statues and monuments Father I will not have a share in all of this because I have yet to sculpt anything important Even Saddam's huge statue in Firdaws Suare was brought down right after your death I thought I would be happy since I detested him so much but I felt I'd been robbed of the happiness That was not the end I had imagined Those who brought him down were the ones who put him there in the first place They armed him to the teeth in the war that killed Ammoury your favorite son Now some want to sever the head of Abu Ja'far al Mansour the founder of Baghdad and bring down the statue of the poet al Mutanabbi Even the statues are too terrified to sleep at night lest they wake up as ruins The Corpse Washer is an elegantly written story of tragedy and pain in Ira at the turn of the 21st century First I want to applaud the author Sinan Antoon who initially wrote this story in Arabic and then translated it himself into English The protagonist of the story is Jawad a Shiite son of a lower class family As the son of a corpse washer he accompanies his father to work and witnesses the washing rituals and prayers needed to prepare dead bodies for their immediate burials Jawad is torn between continuing the family tradition of corpse washing and his love for sculpting and art It is no secret that Jawad cannot stand the smell of his father's workplace much less comprehend how his father makes a living out of death Soon however death starts to haunt Jawad when one war after the other plagues his home countryThe chapters in this book are all short Antoon skillfully gives us glimpses into Jawad's life We swing back and forth between the past and the present between Jawad's daily life and his nightmares Although the protagonist faces a lot of agony and sorrow Antoon's imagery is incredibly beautiful and made me think that Arabic is a very poetic language Moreover we get to see what life is like for ordinary Irais and how they deal with the grim realities of living in a dilapidated state loosing male relatives to war perpetual power outages friends fleeing the country and seeking asylum abroad the rise of sectarianism everyday another suicide bombing etc The ending fell a bit too short for me but I think it was a real representation of what a lot Irais face nowadays This definitely was a sad story but the author wrote it with such delicacy that I was left pleasantly surprised I was definitely whisked away to another world When al Ja'fari was chosen to be the prime minister my uncle wrote to me Marx used to say that 'history always repeats itself twice the first time as tragedy the second time as farce' And what we are witnessing now in Ira is a farce Who would've ever believed that Ira's prime minister would be from the Da'wa Party spear heading a backward sectarian list When I left Ira the Da'wa Party was banned and later the Americans placed it on the list of terrorist organizations Now Bush shakes hands with al Ja'fari It's a bizarre world I try to find a rational explanation for such acts I know that humans can reach a stage of anger and despair in which their lives have no value and no other life or soul has value either But men have been slaughtering others and killing themselves for ideas and symbols since time immemorial; what is new are the numbers of bodies becoming bombs His sweet talk during our engagement was like the courting of political parties before they assume powerview spoiler So unfair of youTo be gone for so longWhat will I tell peopleWhen they ask about youYou left my heart burningReeling from your absenceSo unfair of you and so cruelWhat will I tell peopleWhen they ask about youHow could you everLet me down and betray meNever think my heart will healNever think the pain will go awayWhat will I tell peopleWhen they ask about you hide spoiler
